Carnegie is named after Andrew Carnegie, a philanthropist and industrialist who donated one of his libraries to the borough. The area has historical significance, as it was a hub for coal mining in the past. The borough's main employers were steel mills, including Superior Steel & Union Electric Steel. Additionally, Carnegie had a rail yard with connections to several railroads, contributing to its industrial history.
The borough faced challenges in the 1970s with the closure of major steel mills like J & L in the Pittsburgh region.
